Super welterweight contender Ishe "Sugar Shay" Smith (24-5) appeared on a recent edition of BoxingScene's official audio show, The Boxing Lab. The native Las Vegan really opened up during the interview and spoke to us about a variety of topics including his future plans after his February 23rd fight against IBF super welterweight champion Cornelius "K9" Bundrage - which takes place in Detroit, Michigan. Smith is very confident that he will capture his first world title in the fight that will be televised by Showtime.
Smith surprised us when he mentioned the fighters he wants to face should he win the belt. Most fighters typically look for the biggest money fights available to them and that would seem to make even more sense for the 34-year-old Smith who hasn't received any major paydays in his career. Smith though said that he would like to face some of the fighters that he feels deserve a title shot and for one reason or another have been looked over by other champions.
"When I win this title I am going to give Carlos Molina a chance to win this title because he deserves it. I am not going to sit on this title. I am not going to ask for the biggest purse," Smith told The Boxing Lab.
"I am going to go to Leonard Ellerbe and ask for Molina. If that fight doesn't happen its not because of me. I think he deserves it. I look at the raw deal that he got versus Kirkland and I think he deserves it. I am not looking to unify yet. I want to take this title back to Las Vegas and defend it a few times. If [Gabe] Rosado gets back on his feet then I will give him a shot too. I have a lot of respect for him moving up in weight and fighting Triple G. After those two fights then I will look to unify titles," he continued.
