Ireland’s Rising Amateur Boxing Stars Back on Sept. 16
The Everglades Hotel will host Ireland’s rising amateur boxing stars of the future on Sunday, September 16th, when a “Young Ireland” Selection will take on Scotland in the first international of its kind ever to be staged in Derry.
The event, organized by the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, will be hosted by the local Oakleaf Boxing Club as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations.
In fact, Ireland’s Director of Boxing, Mr. Dom O’Rourke, has included a host of Irish champions for the Derry event having also confirmed that Derry will be well represented in the Irish squad.
Indeed, the host club has not been left out with the Oakleaf quartet of Ryan Green, Tom Stokes, Brett McGinty, Francie Stokes joined by St. Joseph’s Liam Glennon, all current Irish champions.
One to watch on the night will be Hughie Nevin, from Cavan, a brother of Ireland’s recent silver medallist John Joe. The younger Nevin is regarded as one of the brightest prospects for the next Olympics in Rio in 2016 and, no doubt, many of his Irish team-mates will also have Brazil included their long term ambitions.
The Oakleaf ABC Committee is hoping to have at least two of Team Ireland’s medallists as guests for the International. Chairman Eugene O’Kane said the interest in the multi-national has been very encouraging and due to the interest, the event may well have to be a “ticket only” function.
Further information the full make-up of the Irish team will be released shortly.
