During last night's BWAA awards dinner in LA, one of the bigger stories making the rounds at the event was the possibility of a fight between Juan Manuel Marquez and WBO/WBA/IBF lightweight champion Nate Campbell.

Marquez is said to be very interested in moving up in weight to make the fight. The fight has not been discussed to the point of numbers or venues, but biggest obstacle from the start is having both sides agree on when the fight should take place.

According to sources in Golden Boy, Marquez wants to return against Campbell in November on pay-per-view, while Campbell wants to fight a lot sooner than November. Campbell's co-promoter, Terry Trekas of One Punch Productions, advised MaxBoxing/BoxingScene.com that a fight with Marquez for November was completely out of the question.

Campbell presents a very dangerous fight for Marquez, but a trilogy bout with Pacquiao can be forced if Marquez moves up in weight and manages to capture three of the major titles, while Pacquiao (if he beat David Diaz in June) holds the remaining title belt. On the other hand, if Campbell beats Marquez, then Pacquiao would look to fight Campbell.

But, Campbell has been mentioned as a possible opponent for Pacquiao in the fall (if Pacquiao beats Diaz in June). If Campbell agrees to fight Marquez in November, he would be automatically ruled out from a scheduling standpoint. And, with three titles around his waits, Campbell has some mandatory obilgations to consider.

"I hear Marquez wants to fight him in November on pay-per-view. There is no way that Nate will wait until November. Nate is not the kind of fighter who can sit on the shelf for six to seven-months. Nate is at his best when he fights on a consistent basis," Trekas said.
