Hunter Waits on Khan's Statement, Angulo Not Official Yet

According to the Daily Mail, Virgil Hunter just added a new fighter to his expanding stable in former 140-pound titleholder Amir Khan.

Not just yet, the reigning BWAA Trainer of the Year said Thursday night.

“Yes, we’ve talked about working together, but I don’t see any stories out there with an actual official statement from Khan’s team,” Hunter told BoxingScene.com/CSNBayArea.com.  “Until then, they’re still just rumors to me.”

Khan recently parted ways with Freddie Roach following his surprise stoppage loss to Danny Garcia.  Hunter, renowned for helping develop the skills of super middleweight Andre Ward since his amateur days, discussed a hypothetical partnership with the British star.

“Amir has exceptional gifts,” Hunter said.  “At the same time, we have to make sure it’s the right fit for him."

The celebrated cornerman also commented on Khan relocating to Northern California for camp.  Hunter spends his training time between his personal gym in Hayward, Calif., and King's Gym, located a few miles north in Oakland.

"It would be nice to have him up here in the Bay Area, where most of my resources are, and in between fights if we could, because that’s where the real learning takes place,” he added.

In recent months, Hunter has also been instrumental in the recent resurgences of middleweight Brandon Gonzales, junior welterweights Mike Dallas and Karim Mayfield, and lightweight Stan Martyniouk.

Following Ward’s triumphant performance over Chad Dawson on Sept. 8, middleweight Fernando Guerrero informed BoxingScene.com that he, too, would be moving to Northern California to work with Hunter.  In addition, junior middleweight contender Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo has been rumored to be making a similar move following his release from an immigration detention center.

“Yes, Guerrero is working with me.  He’s been up to the Bay Area,” Hunter said.  “I actually brought him and Brandon Gonzales down to L.A. to spar Angulo...Angulo’s a good man, and I’ve enjoyed talking to him.”

However, similar to the situation with Khan, Hunter has not yet officially agreed to work with Angulo.

“We’ve spoken about it, and I know he has a fight on November 10, so I’m sure they’d like to expedite the process,” the trainer said.  “I think we’ll have a decision on that by next Tuesday.”

Hunter has a busy month ahead, with Martyniouk fighting in Sacramento on Oct. 20 and Mayfield already in camp to prepare for his HBO debut on Oct. 27 against Mauricio Herrera.
