Russian promoter Vladimir Hryunov has accused the Klitschko brother, Wladimir and Vitali, and their team, of spreading rumors that he placed a large wager on Enzo Maccarinelli to defeat former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr.
According to certain outlets, Hryunov allegedly bet as much as 1 million on Maccarinelli, who brutally knocked Jones out in four rounds.
The rumors may have caused a rift between Hrynunov and Jones. The Russian promoted staged last Saturday’s card and also helped Jones become a Russian citizen.
Hryunov lashed out, blaming the Klitschkos for the controversy. He claims it was payback for hinting that Wladimir may have thrown his fight with Tyson Fury.
“Over the past three days, I was subjected to provocation by the promotional company of the Klitschko brothers,” said Hryunov.
“At one time, I became aware and established facts that during the fight between Wladimir Klitschko and Tyson Fury, there many bets that came down on Tyson Fury to win and I was told about this by a friend of mine from England, promoter Frank Warren.
“Now the company of the Klitschko brothers have organized this provocation with more political overtones that I allegedly put the money on Roy Jones to lose.”
