Before a sellout crowd of 17,560 at Montreal's Bell Centre, 46-year-old Bernard Hopkins made boxing history by becoming the oldest man to win a major world title. Hopkins secured a twelve round unanimous decision over Jean Pascal to win the WBC/IBO light heavyweight titles. Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KOs) is already mapping out his future opponents. First he is contractually obligated to face former champion Chad Dawson next. After Dawson, Hopkins would love to return to Canada to fight undefeated IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute.
During a recent conference call, Hopkins discussed a possible fight with Bute. There are issues with making the fight possible. The biggest issue among the bunch; Bute is contractually bound to Showtime, and Hopkins wants to continue his relationship with rival cable network HBO. Hopkins would have to wait until Bute's contract is up with Showtime, which probably won't happen until 2012.
"I think Canada would like to ee me again for a fight with Bute. I would love to beat Bute after Chad Dawson, and then I will go on to something bigger and better. I will not retire until I get close to 50, that's about four or five years from now," Hopkins said.
