Hearn Will Soon Reveal Details of Sky Television Deal

By Terence Dooley

Craig McEwan’s desire to meet Darren Barker on September 8 may have come to naught yet the Scottish middleweight has been given a glimmer of hope of appearing on a Matchroom show at some point in the future.  Eddie Hearn, Matchroom’s Managing Director, recently told BoxingScene that his organization is keeping an open mind when it comes to the Edinburgh-based middleweight contender.

McEwan fights on an Anthony Lindie-promoted show at Dundee’s Ice Arena on September 1, a week before Barker’s fight against Simone Rotolo at London’s Alexandra Palace.  A win for Barker would help propel the Barnet stylist towards a second world title shot, and away from McEwan.  Hearn, though, recently praised the Scottish fighter’s ability and may bear the 20-2 (10) contender in mind should a slot arise on a Matchroom show during the fall or winter.

“Craig’s a quality fighter, and I really like Billy Nelson [McEwan’s manager], so we want to help him out,” said Hearn.  “We want to work with as many people as we can.”

Hearn also admitted that he has heard the persistent rumours that Sky Sports have made Matchroom their sole provider of boxing content, although both sides have kept their own counsel when pressed on the issue.  Hearn, though, stated that the details of Matchroom’s latest T.V. deal with the network will be revealed at their annual summer media day, which is expected to take place soon.

“We’ll make an announcement very soon about our position with Sky,” said Hearn.  “There’s reports and Sky have shown a confidence in us, but that is all we’re saying until our big media day.  We’re in a position where lots of fighters want to sign with us, so I just want to be careful and make sure I can keep my promises to fighters because that means a lot to me.”
