New York- The 'Roman Empire' also known as WBC flyweight champion Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez (43-0, 37KOs) made his HBO debut last May on the undercard of Gennady Golovkin and Willie Monroe. Gonzalez long known as one of the best boxers in the sport finally got his crack on HBO and did the most with his opportunity.
Gonzalez made quick work of former champion Edgar Sosa, who is a credible flyweight. Gonzalez stopped his opposition in two rounds. Credit has to be given to HBO Sports executive Peter Nelson and promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions for showcasing the pound for pound talent on one of the higher rated boxing telecasts of the year.
Nelson is all in for bringing Gonzalez back and is looking to make career defining fights for ‘Chocolatito’.
“The Roman Empire,” Nelson laughed as he spoke to BoxingScene.com. “I think right now his talent and his career are at a point where he’s looking to find career defining fights and that’s something we’d like to deliver on. The Sosa fight, many people expected to go longer than expected but he certainly made an impression on many that night."
Gonzalez’ manager has said to ESPN Deportes that he is likely to return in September and maybe on another Golovkin undercard. Nelson says things are in motion and there are discussions with all parties involved.
“We’re going to talk to Mr. Honda and Tom Loeffler to architect that and make those defining fights happen. Whether it’s an (Francisco) Estrada rematch, (Giovanni) Segura, (Brian) Viloria, and eventually Naoya Inoue, those are the fight are on the horizon. But right now it’s about planning what’s next."
BoxingScene.com's Steve Kim reported on Tuesday night that Jean Pascal vs. Yunieski Gonzalez was in jeopardy. The fight is the scheduled co-feature to Sergey Kovalev's HBO televised defense against Nadjib Mohammedi on July 25th at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Roman Gonzalez is the frontrunner to replace the Pascal's showcase.
