LAS VEGAS – Luckily for Jose Zepeda, his fight Saturday night against Hank Lundy didn’t at all resemble the spectacular slugfest he somehow won in his previous outing. Zepeda demonstrated, however, that he still has something left following his brutal brawl with Ivan Baranchyk seven months ago. The top-rated junior welterweight contender carefully out-boxed the 37-year-old Lundy and won a rather unremarkable, 10-round unanimous decision.
The mentality is always the same for Hank Lundy every day he steps into the gym. Train every day, stay prepared and eventually the phone will ring with the right opportunity. That day arrived in late April, when Jose Zepeda was in need of an opponent for a May 22 date on ESPN. Lundy (31-8-1, 14KOs) immediately agreed to terms less than a month ago for this weekend’s fight, which takes place at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 37-year-old Philadelphia native entered the equation after the Nevada State Athletic Commission rejected Mexico’s Pedro Campa as an opponent.
LAS VEGAS – Jose Ramirez was much more animated Friday as he went nose-to-nose with Josh Taylor than he was following their press conference Thursday. Ramirez talked trash back to Taylor after they weighed in at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas for their 140-pound title unification fight Saturday night. Ramirez, of Avenal, California, stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale first at 139.6 pounds. Taylor, of Prestonpans, Scotland, officially weighed the same amount, 139.6 pounds.
LAS VEGAS – Jose Zepeda was more than surprised when his handlers informed him that the Nevada State Athletic Commission refused to approve Pedro Campa as his upcoming opponent.
Jose Zepeda has a new opponent for his first fight since his incredible brawl with Ivan Baranchyk. ESPN will air the 10-round bout between Zepeda and Lundy as part of a three-fight telecast that’ll feature 140-pound champions Jose Ramirez and Josh Taylor in the main event.
