Guerrero-Berto Winner in Line For a Bigger Opportunity

By Rick Reeno

On November 24th at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California - WBC interim-welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (30-1-1, 18KOs) will defend his title against former two-time beltholder Andre Berto (28-1, 22KOs) .  HBO will televise.
The winner of the fight will find himself in position for a major opportunity in 2013, says Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.

Guerrero has been angling, for the last year, to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. And Berto, although affiliated with Mayweather's adviser Al Haymon, would certainly welcome that opportunity as well. An impressive win would go a long way for either fighter. And a loss will cause significant damage to either fighter. In other words, a lot is at stake.

"This is a big fight, one of the biggest fights that you can make in this division. The fact is, it is a very deep division with a lot of names there and a lot of matchups. You have to be careful when you chase these big fights, because these big fights will eventually happen - but you have to be careful not to sit around and wait because you just never know when the stars are going to be aligned. There are a group of fighters that I can see getting those big names," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.

"But Robert, what he has accomplished already, [going through] multiple weight classes, world championships in multiple weight classes. Everything he stands for and represents. He can be in any big fight. And the same thing can be said for Andre Berto....a terrific young man, an exciting fighter and always has exciting fights. Both of these guys are already there. But instead of just waiting around and hoping for these stars to to be aligned - they decided 'hey let's just go and get it on' and the result is - this is going to be a great night for fight fans and sports fans alike."
