As if Luis Grajeda's career hasn't already fallen on hard times, he will now have to spend the next year thinking about his latest setback.
The journeyman boxer from Mexico was issued a 12-month suspension and a hefty fine by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a failed drug test following his eight-round loss to Terrell Gausha on June 20 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The ruling came during the commission's monthly agenda hearing, which was held Monday morning in Las Vegas. Grajeda was a no-show, nor was legal representation on hand to explain his testing positive for Nadrolone, producing a T:E result three times the allowable 4:1 amounth and also submitting a false pre-fight questionnaire. failing to disclose any supplements and vitamins he was taking prior to the fight.
As a result, the 28-year old boxer will be suspended until next June—12 months from the time of his failed drug test—and fined $2,667, which is 33.33% of his $8,000. Grajeda will also be responsible for reimbursement of costs absorbed by the Attorney General's office.
Because he already lost the fight, the official result will stand. Had he won the fight, or had it been ruled a draw, the verdict would have been changed to a No-Decision.
The bout was part of the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBC telecast, headlined by Shawn Porter's 12-round win over Adrien Broner.
Prior to his ring return, Grajeda will have to provide clean drug tests to the Nevada commission both 30 days and 7 days prior to his next fight.
Grajeda has managed just one win in his past six starts (1-4-1, 1KO) over that stretch. His overall record stands at 18-5-2 (14KOs).
