Gonzalez-Mijares in Play For 10/4, Arce Bout Hits Snag

By Salvador Rodriguez

A major snag is standing in the way of the Mexican showdown between WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez and four division beltholder Jorge 'Travieso' Arce.

A few days ago, both sides announced that a financial deal was reached between both sides for a planned bout on September 20th in Los Mochis.

The biggest hurdle to overcome was the television deal. Arce fights exclusively on TV Azteca and Gonzalez appears on rival network Televisa.

An agreement was proposed where both networks would air the fight at the same time.

While initially it appeared that both networks would be on board, it now appears that TV Azteca has no interest in sharing the broadcast rights with Televisa.

The television issue is so severe that Gonzalez's promoter, Osvaldo Küchle, has already met with Pepe Gomez of Cancun Boxing to discuss a fight with Cristian 'Diamante' Mijares for October 4th in Cancun.

"Well the chances [of the Arce fight taking place] are running out. Last night I met with Pepe Gomez to discuss a possible fight between Jhonny Gonzalez and Cristian Mijares for the first Saturday in October in Cancun," Küchle said.

Mijares is more skilled than Arce but Jorge would have made the fight more interesting (anyway both Mijares and Arce most likely end losing vs Jhonny). I still remember when Arce was fed to WV Jr in P Rico and…

Mijares looked terrible in his last bout but JG has lost something the past 18 months, especially his power vs mediocre opposition still, he beats Mijares...

I was kinda looking forward to the fight with Arce.

I have no interest in watching Mijares vs Gonzalez. I wish GBP would just make Gonzalez vs Mares in December have it on Canelo undercard. It's really ridiculous that this rematch hasn't happened yet and the blame has to go…
I think mijares has a real shot here.!
That's why Gonzalez needs to fight a real contender. If Mijares has a chance, then Jhonny is no good. Nonito would put Mijares in orbit.
