Undefeated Jose 'Chelo' González (21-0, 16KOs) is one step away from getting a shot at the WBO lightweight title held by British star Ricky Burns (35-2, 10KOs), who captured the WBO's championship at 130 with a dominating win over Gonzalez's countryman Roman 'Rocky' Martinez. Gonzalez, the top ranked contender, is hoping to secure the fight in the summer. Gonzalez returns on February 2nd in Bayamon against an opponent to be announced.
"We're waiting to see what happens and we're waiting for the day. (Promoter) Peter (Rivera) is going to secure that for me and we'll see when we are going to fight for the title. If all goes well on February 2, I imagine that in two months, my next fight will be with Burns. I've seen him fight several times and he is an elusive fighter," Gonzalez said.
He said he was aware that Burns will not be an easy opponent and although he possesses a strong punch, Burns knows how to use his wits in the rings by boxing.
"He's very smart in the ring. When we fight I'll be careful with him. I'm recovered from the left shoulder injury and on February 2 you will see a great fight from me," Gonzalez said.
