While Golden Boy Promotions was able to put together one of the biggest and most lucrative fights the sport can produce with Floyd Mayweather vs Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, there is still one fight fans are clamoring pretty hard for: Danny Garcia vs. Lucas Matthysse.
The Junior Welterweight clash has been brewing and finally reached a fever pitch when Matthysse destroyed top rated Lamont Peterson in three rounds with Garcia sitting ringside to witness it all. It set up the stage perfectly for the two best fighters at 140 pounds to face each other in a huge fight.
Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez was on the latest episode of BoxingScene Radio and brought good news to boxing fans as it looks like we all might get what we’ve been asking for as Gomez reveals the fight is close to being finalized.
“We're very close. I'm actually waiting for a call back from my co-promoter in Argentina. If he calls me back tonight maybe we can close. If not he'll call me back in the morning as I left him a message. But we are very, very close in making the fight. It's a fight that we have to make and basically Richard [Schaefer] put it that way. Richard gave me my marching orders and he said that we have to make this fight. It’s what the public wants, it’s what the media wants [so] we have to make this fight” Gomez would tell BoxingScene Radio.
Even though Danny Garcia has previously said he would welcome a bout with Matthysse, some still question whether or not Garcia truly wants the fight. Matthysse is deemed dangerous and would probably be favored to win but Gomez advises not to count Garcia out and that he really does want this fight.
“Believe it or not, a lot of people are counting Danny out. Don't count Danny out. Danny wants this fight. And it’s a style that suits Danny. People are thinking [that] of Danny because of the last fight with Zab Judah [which] is a guy with speed [and] a lefty. Zab can give anybody problems. But if you're a guy that’s going to stand and fight, then Danny has a chance too” said Gomez.
Making this fight for Golden Boy is also important as they have not only made it their goal to make the best fights possible, they also want to satisfy the fans and give them the fights they want to see. If all goes according to plan, we could be hearing an announcement very soon.
“It’s a terrific fight, it’s a good fight and it’s a fight I agree with Richard that we have to make. I think it would be a black eye if we can't make it but we're very, very close. I feel very optimistic and I think in the next couple of days there should be an announcement” revealed the Golden Boy matchmaker.
Editor's Note: Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told BoxingScene.com on Tuesday that Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles was a potential venue for Garcia-Matthysse.
