Recently K2 Promotions - on behalf of WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) - made an offer to face WBO belt-holder Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12KOs) in a unification on April 23rd. The offer was said to be a deal in excess of $3 million but it seems as though Saunders and his promoter, Frank Warren, have other plans for the spring.
And with that Golovkin will be moving on for the time being.
"Yeah, it looks like BJ Saunders is not going to take the fight right now, although we feel that he'll fight him at some point in the future," Tom Loeffler of K2 confirmed to BoxingScene on Monday afternoon.
"But right now they said it wouldn't make sense for them at this particular time."
For 'GGG' patience has to be a virtue as he continues his quest to capture all the middleweight titles.
"'Canelo' (Saul Alvarez) wanted one more fight before he has to fight Gennady, BJ Saunders is not obligated to fight Gennady. We've always said we can not force people to get in the ring. We can just make big offers to them. I know that after he makes one or two title defenses I'm sure we should be able to make a deal," Loeffler said.
When asked if Warren prefers for a Golovkin-Saunders clash in the future to be in the UK in a stadium setting, Loeffler stated - "I think under their ideal situation that's what the preference would be for Frank Warren and we're certainly not opposed to it as long as we structure the right deal. So as of right now Gennady will be fighting and defending his title and it looks like Saunders will also fight in the spring and we'll see what happens down the road.
"Obviously the top priority for us is the unification with 'Canelo' Alvarez in the fall."
