Tom Loeffler, promoter for WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs), would be far from disappointed if Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) pulled off a major upset by defeating Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) for the WBC middleweight crown on May 7th.
Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to Canelo's WBC crown.
The World Boxing Council allowed both Golovkin and Canelo to take interim bouts before facing each other. Golovkin is scheduled to defend his belt against IBF mandatory challenger Dominic Wade on April 23.
Canelo is a huge favorite to win the fight, which takes place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds.
Because Khan is moving up by eight pounds to fight Canelo - very few expect him to face Golovkin at the full middleweight limit of 160-pounds. He would likely drop down to the junior middleweight limit of 154.
If Khan does wins, and decides to stick around at middleweight to make a mandatory defense against Golovkin in the fall, Loeffler believes the event would be massive.
"The priority is the mandatory position that Gennady has with Canelo," Loeffler told Sky Sports. "That would be the biggest fight in boxing. Clearly, if Amir won [against Canelo] then he would inherit the championship and the order from the WBC is clear: the winner from that fight must fight Golovkin or get stripped of the title.
"From a marketing and promotional standpoint, Amir brings a lot to the table. That's what we always said about a fight with Froch because he would bring the UK fans. We'll see a similar situation with Khan, where he adds a different element by bringing UK fans and combining them with Gennady's following in the States. Khan-Golovkin would be a huge fight in the UK but would be even bigger in the US, from a financial perspective."
