The team behind Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin is still fully focused on reaching an agreement for a fight with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez on September 17th.

Earlier this year, the World Boxing Council ordered Canelo to make a mandatory defense of his WBC middleweight championship in the fall.

Canelo (47-1-1, 33KOs) decided last week to vacate his world title and expressed his dissatisfaction with the WBC's  purse bid deadline of May 24th. A few hours after Canelo made his decision, the sanctioning body officially named Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs) as their new world champion at 160-pounds. Golovkin is also the WBA/IBO/IBF world champion.

The negotiations between the two sides have certainly slowed down.

Canelo and his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, are under fire from both sides. They are getting blasted by fans who believe they are shying away from a fight with Golovkin, and they are also going through a legal battle in Miami, Florida - where Canelo and Golden Boy are being sued by promoter Felix “Tuto” Zabala Jr. of All-Star Boxing, who claims Canelo signed a four year promotional agreement in 2008 and then violated that deal by signing with Golden Boy the following year.

Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, is hoping to resume the negotiations in early June and reach an agreement. If not, Loeffler has alrady made it clear that Golovkin will return to the ring in September - with or without Canelo.

“The negotiations are not dead,” Loeffler said to the Los Angeles Times. “Canelo is still the priority for Gennady, and we’ll try to do what we can from our side to make that fight. It’s the biggest fight in boxing. Golden Boy and Canelo are dealing with that lawsuit now. They need to focus on that."

"It's a fight we want to make and give to boxing fans."But there’s still plenty of time left to make the fight for September. It’s just a matter of sitting down when they’re finished and seeing if we can make all the pieces fit together. It's a fight we want to make and give to boxing fans."
