WBA/IBF/IBO/WBC interim champion Gennady Golovkin is scheduled to return to the ring on April 23rd. Venues in New York, Los Angeles and Texas are interested in hosting the fight.
IBF mandatory challenger Tureano Johnson (19-1) and newly crowned WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders have been mentioned as possible opponents. Sanders and his promoter Frank Warren have asked for a huge purse and the unification bout appears very unlikely to happen in the near future.
While an unification bout would have more luster, Golovkin's coach Abel Sanchez said that he will have his charge ready to go no matter who he is facing.
"You know it is unfortunate that this business has gotten to that point where it is all about money and it is not about testing your wits and testing yourself against the best but I understand it. I understand Saunders point and I understand Warren's point," Sanchez told BoxingScene.com.
"At the end of the day we do have a mandatory that we have to take care of with Tureano. Tureano has earned the right to fight for the IBF title. Of course if we were to fight Saunders it would trump that mandatory and the mandatory would be extended further down the road. Either guy it doesn't matter to me. As long as they give me an opponent and we get to the gym and get ready for whomever it is."
The Big Bear, Calif. based trainer said Triple G is scheduled to return to the gym next month and they will get ready for whichever fighter accepts the assign by.
"I think we have a date penciled in for April 23rd so in a couple weeks Golovkin will come to camp and we will get to work to prepare for either Tureano or BJ. They are both great fights and it is just another step on the road to superstardom for Golovkin," Sanchez told BoxingScene.com.
