As BoxingScene.com reported a few days ago, IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25KOs) made it clear that he is dead serious about fighting IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs).
Brook retained his world title on Saturday night with an easy two round knockout of IBF mandatory challenger Kevin Bizier in Sheffield.
Golovkin is back on April 23rd, also against an IBF mandatory challenger, when he faces Dominic Wade at The Forum in Los Angeles, California.
If Golovkin wins, he will be focused on a potential fall showdown with WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
Brook wants to emulate his domestic rival, Amir Khan, who announced last month that he was rising from welterweight to a catch-weight of 155-pounds to challenge Canelo on May 7th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
If Brook faces Golovkin, he would be willing to do it at a catch-weight of 157-pounds.
Brook approached his promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, and told him to secure a fight with Golovkin. He wants to get some form of a major fight in the summer, hopefully something with enough value to stage in a stadium. If he needs to travel to America for a major fight, there is no problem if the terms are right.
"I told Eddie [that I want to fight Golovkin]. People don't believe me. They think that I avoid fighters, but it shows you what cojones I've got. I want to fight Golovkin. Sugar Ray Leonard went up there and boxed Hagler. And Mayweather started at super featherweight and he boxed big guys. If you've got all the skills, they pay the bills. Im ot scare of any fighter out there," Brook told BoxingScene.com's Declan Taylor.
There are some fans and critics who don't believe Brook is serious.
Abel Sanchez, trainer of Golovkin, believes Brook. But whether or not the fight can be made is another story.
"I think he's ballsy. I believe him [that he wants to fight Golovkin]. Golovkin right now is the boogeyman and nobody seems to want to fight him. You're talking about a 147-pounder who wants to move up like Khan did with Canelo. I think that's ballsy and I think he realizes that he's got nothing to lose like Khan has nothing to lose with Canelo. If Tom and Eddie can put it together, it would be an interesting fight," Sanchez said.
