WBA/IBO/WBC interim-middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin didn't have a hint of trouble, easing inside the stipulated weight limit just seven days from his May 16th fight at the Inglewood Forum in California. As set out by the WBC rules, Golovkin complied with the the 7 day weighin, registering 165-pounds on the scale. As previously reported, Willie Monroe Jr., Golovkin´s opponent, informed the sanctioned body by way of his manager that he wont fulfill the WBC pre-weight requirements. And because of that Monroe will not be able to capture the WBC interim middleweight championship. In the event Monroe wins, the title will remain vacant and he won't become Miguel Cotto's mandatory.

Gennady Golovkin is deep into the heart of his training camp for his upcoming showdown with Willie Monroe, Jr., but still managed to take time to check out the biggest event of the 21st Century. The unbeaten middleweight titlist briefly broke camp to witness Floyd Mayweather cement his status as an all-time great with a clear-cut 12-round win over Manny Pacquiao on May 2 in Las Vegas. While most were left disappointed in the lack of entertainment value that came with the pricy event, Golovkin saw the main event for what it was – a virtuoso performance by Mayweather.

Gennady Golovkin has affirmed his place as the best middleweight in the world, to where essentially any divisional contender he faces is viewed as a mismatch. Willie Monroe Jr. represents the worst case scenario of an optional title defense, with Golovkin as high as an 80-1 favorite in their May 16 clash, which airs live on HBO from The Forum in Inglewood, California. Until the unbeaten knockout artist is able to get his fellow titlists – including World middleweight champion Miguel Cotto – in the ring, his team has to search for new ways to maintain focus and interest. In selecting Monroe Jr. (19-1, 6KOs) for this bout, Golovkin will have to deal with a slick southpaw who has never been dropped or stopped and also comes in at the hottest point of his career.

In lieu of a fight with middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, Gennady Golovkin and his team sought the kind of challenge that would motivate Golovkin, selecting Willie Monroe Jr. for an HBO fight on May 16 in Southern California. “Willie Monroe made the most sense. He fought on ESPN four times within the last 12 months. He won the Boxcino tournament. And he’s from here, from upstate New York. He’s known within the United States,” said Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, in an interview in Manhattan on April 25.
