There has been speculation that a middleweight unification tilt between WBA/IBO champion Gennady Golovkin and IBF belt-holder David Lemieux is being seriously negotiated by K2 Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.
According to a couple of sources, things are moving along well and getting close to completion. This showdown would take place on October 17th at the Madison Square Garden in New York City. Tom Loeffler, the managing director, for K2 didn't say much other than to reiterate that Golovkin's goal was to unify the 160 pound division. In addition to the WBA strap, Golovkin is also the WBC interim champion.
Lemieux won the title in emphatic fashion on the night of June 20th by knocking down the game Hassan N'Dam four times en route to a twelve round unanimous decision.
Golovkin has fought twice in 2015. First he stopped Martin Murray in Monaco in eleven rounds and then he halted Willie Monroe Jr. in six rounds at the Forum in Los Angeles on May 17th.
Word is that should this fight come to fruition it would be on pay-per-view.
