Gennady Golovkin is now in camp in Big Bear with trainer Abel Sanchez preparing for his September 16th assignment against Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs).
"It's been two weeks, maybe this time I'm more excited, it's more serious for me. It's my biggest fight, I feel more emotion for this fight,"said Golovkin on Wednesday afternoon, who has yearned for a fight of this magnitude since coming over to America in 2012.
While the fight's importance is huge, the way he'll prepare wont differ all that much from the past.
"The physical training is the same, I know I believe in Abel (Sanchez) style. The physical will be the same but we'll have a different boxing strategy - like boxing school," says Golovkin, who's coming off a victory over Daniel Jacobs on March 18th. It was a fight that went to the cards and some observers believed that it was a sign that Golovkin - who just turned 35 - is now past his prime.
But perhaps it was more a matter of style. While Jacobs employed a lot of movement, Alvarez figures to be more stationary. As they say,'styles make fights.'
"Yeah, I think so, 'Canelo' is shorter, I think he'll fight at a closer distance and with more power," stated Golovkin (37-0, 33 KO's).
"He's a Mexican fighter. I think it'll be a more interesting fight for the people because he's more like a warrior, not dancing too much. He's not scared."
Early on, this training camp hasn't been too strenuous given the various media demands that Golovkin has had to endure in promoting this event.
"I understand my situation, this is good for promotions,'' stated Golovkin, who this week hosted an HBO film crew who was there to attain footage for '24/7'.
"I really can't start my training camp because every day interviews and all that and so many people come, the same questions. It's crazy."
