Abel Sanchez, trainer of WBC, WBA, IBO, IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, will be keeping a close eye on the outcome of May 6th pay-per-view clash between Mexican superstars Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

The two boxers will fight at a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds.

For Canelo, who last fought at 154-pounds in September, coming up in weight will be easy. For Chavez, who struggled with his weight for the last few years, getting down could be tough.

Three of Chavez's last five fights took place between 170-172-pounds. When he returned to the ring last month in Mexico, it was the first time Chavez had made the super middleweight limit of 168 for the first time in over two years.

According to Sanchez, the entire fight depends on Chavez and his ability to make the weight in a safe manner.

"I think it all depends on Chavez. That's a lot of weight for Canelo, but Chavez could be very weak at 164.5. Canelo has the advantage, because he is forcing Chavez down to that weight. But if [Chavez] takes proper care and loses the weight gradually and not lose everything at the end - I think the fight will be even better because then Chavez will have the energy to fight for the entire twelve rounds. But if Chavez kills himself to make the weight, then Canelo will have everything in his favor to win," Sanchez said to ESPN Deportes.

If Canelo overcomes Chavez - and Golovkin defeats Daniel Jacobs on March 18th - then we could see a Canelo-Golovkin fight in September.

"We as a team are confident that the GGG-Canelo fight will happen. It is necessary for boxing. I think [Canelo's promoter] Oscar [De La Hoya] is going to keep his word and will do it. [Our promoter] Tom Loeffler told us they are still talking and that's good. Let's wait and see if they end up fighting. We'll see what they say, then we have to keep the pressure on for the fight to happen," Sanchez said.
