BoxingScene.com caught up with WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin this past Saturday in Los Angeles, California. Golovkin was hoping to face former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez on July 19th but that fight has been shelved for the moment as Chavez and his promoter Top Rank couldn't come to an agreement for the fight and a contract extension.
Golovkin will now fight on July 26th and former champion Daniel Geale is the front runner to land the fight that will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York.
On June 7th, Sergio Martinez will defend his WBC middleweight title on HBO pay-per-view against three division champion Miguel Cotto. Golovkin said that he is very interested in facing the winner and feels that the fight must take place to determine who the best middleweight in the world is.
"I think it is going to be a great fight. I respect both fighters. I think they both have a chance to win. I am very interested in fighting the winner. It is very important (that I face the winner) because it will decide who is the best at 160 pounds," Golovkin stated.
Former WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will likely move up to the middleweight division in the near future. His next fight is co tracked at 155 pounds which technically makes it a middleweight fight. GGG has sparred with Canelo in the past and while he said he would like to face the popular Mexican, he feels that their network allegiances would prevent that fight from happening.
"That is another interesting fight. Canelo, I know him personally. It is a different situation, Canelo is with Gooden Boy and works with Showtime and I am with HBO so I don't think it could happen," Golovkin told BoxingScene.com.
