Eric Gomez, Vice President for Golden Boy Promotions, is confident the ongoing negotiations for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin will not reach the purse bid deadline of May 24th.
Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs), who holds the WBA/IBO/IBF world titles, is the WBC's mandatory challenger to title currently around the waist of Canelo (47-1-1, 33KOs).
In the event a deal is not reached, the sanctioning body set a purse bid date of May 24th in Mexico City.
Golovkin was ringside last Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, when Canelo knocked out Amir Khan in six rounds. Canelo then called Golovkin into the ring and accepted his challenge before the live crowd of over 16,000 fans. The two sides began their discussions the following day.
Gomez, who promotes Canelo, was not able to disclose the details of the current state of the negotiations. The two sides are trying to avoid the possibility of the negotiations falling apart by revealing aspects of their ongoing talks in the press.
"The truth is there won't be a purse bid. This is going to get done [before that]. We'll come to an agreement and we will see what we're going to do, but there won't be a purse bid. We are trying to make the fight. This is what we're discussing right now and we'll see what happens," Gomez told ESPN Deportes.
"We are in talks, that's the only thing that I can say, so let's see if we reach an agreement. We agreed not to disclose the details until then. It's a big fight, it is obvious that there is a a lot of interest and attention, but the reality is that we have our plans as a team and we have to do what is best for the career of Saul, and if we can reach an agreement, which is what we're talking about, that's even better."
