Richard Schaefer is back on the scene and the head of Ringstar Sports has told various media outlets that if he were still in charge of Golden Boy Promotions that he would have already have made a bout between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (who is Golden Boy's top client) and middleweight king, Gennady Golovkin.
Which is a curious statement to Eric Gomez, the president of Goldern Boy Promotions.
"It's funny because everybody wants to be a Monday morning quarterback when they don't have the playbook," he said to BoxingScene.com on Wednesday afternoon. "So it's easy to come up with comments like that, it's non-sense. He has no information on what's going on."
And Gomez doesn't believe that Schaefer is in any position to question how this fight is being consummated.
"What I do know is - and history will show - that he had five years to try to do (Floyd) Mayweather-(Manny) Pacquiao and he couldn't succeed. And ultimately it got done when he was out of the business. The fight finally got done," Gomez said.
As Schaefer was sidelined due to a non-compete clause as part of his settlement with Golden Boy, Mayweather and Pacquiao met on May 2nd, 2015. The split between Schaefer (who was the company's CEO) and Golden Boy was an acrimonious one.
Gomez states - "All I can say is this: he made his decisions, that's in the past. We're moving forward and all the employees still here know the truth about what happened. We are all happier now and in a better place."
Is there any chance that Golden Boy and Ringstar Sports will ever do business together in the future?
"We're willing to do work with anybody. If he has a fighter that's his fighter - that he has under contract - why not? We're willing to work with anybody if it's a fight that makes sense. We want to make the best fights possible," said Gomez.
