Fedor Lapin, trainer for WBO cruiserweight world champion Krzysztof Glowacki (25-0, 16 KO) of Poland, says everything is still course for an April title defense against former IBF beltholder Steve Cunningham (28-7-1, 13 KOs).
One date being mentioned for the fight is April 16th.
Glowacki captured the title last August by knocking out longtime champion Marco Huck in a strong Fight of The Year candidate. Glowacki was badly hurt in the sixth when Huck dropped him. He was able to recover and came back in the eleventh to knock Huck out. Huck was ahead on all three of the official scorecards at the time of the stoppage.
Glowacki suffered several injured during the fight with Huck. He was forced to have surgery and is now fully recovered.
Cunningham and Glowacki are the only two fighters to defeat Huck at cruiserweight. Cunningham stopped Huck in the twelfth round of their 2007 bout. Huck then went unbeaten in 20 fights (minus one controversial decision loss to Alexander Povetkin at heavyweight).
The last time Cunningham was in the ring was back in August of last year when he fought to a draw with Antonio Tarver. The fight was the subject of some recent controversy with Tarver testing positive for a banned substance. The official result will change to a no-contest.
Cunningham has been fighting at heavyweight since 2012, but was far better suited for the cruiserweight limit. He only weighed 204-pounds for his last bout - four pounds above the cruiser limit of 200.
The fight with Glowacki will be Cunningham's first at cruiserweight since losing a twelve round unanimous decision to then IBF champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez in February 2012 rematch.
