Glenn Donaire Weighed and Ready For Omar Soto Bout

By Jake Donovan

Glenn Donaire makes the third ring appearance since ending a three year hiatus year. The flyweight contender faces Omar Soto in a matchup of former title challengers.

Both fighters made weight for Friday’s main event at the A La Carte Pavilion in Tampa, Florida. Donaire 19-4-1 (10KO) weighed right at the flyweight limit of 112 lb, while Soto was slightly lighter at 111.5 lb.

Weight was an issue the last time Soto (22-9-2, 15KO) was in the ring. The Mexican contender was more than three pounds over the light flyweight limit in his title challenge against Roman Gonzalez, thus making him ineligible for Gonzalez’ belt originally at stake. The situation proved moot, as Soto was knocked out in two rounds.

The 32-year old Donaire looked impressive in each of his two comeback bouts. His ring return last December ended with an 8th round stoppage of former strawweight champ Alex ‘Nene’ Sanchez, who was also coming off of a lengthy hiatus. Donaire’s most recent win came this past March, taking a 12-round decision over Omar Salado.

Friday’s bout headlines the latest edition of Boxeo Telemundo, which airs live at 11:35PM ET.
