By Cliff Rold - It took too long but, after an awkward stretch where the aging didn’t seem interested in acting their part, a youth movement appears afoot in boxing. The sport needs it. Young fighters have a way of doing something older, wiser fighters sometimes forget to do. They fight. Still with a chip on their shoulder, still working towards riches, matches of quality fighters whose physical peaks and mental acuity are near congruent have often been special. Just a couple of weeks ago, fight fans were reminded as Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto took turns swinging for the gates and putting each other on the deck. A couple weeks before that, Flyweights Luis Concepcion and Hernan Marquez beat the hell out of each other and God bless them for it. That doesn’t mean the vets don’t have their place. Erik Morales showed Marcos Maidana he wasn’t ready for the rocking chair just yet. Juan Manuel Marquez might just snare his dream third match with Manny Pacquiao, still reigning as the Lightweight king. And when the smoke clears from next week’s big event, arguably the two most intriguing matches over the next four weeks in boxing will feature men closer to 50 than they are to thirty. On May 21st, the great Bernard Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 KO) will challenge Light Heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KO) for the second fight in a row.

According to boxing adviser Greg Leon, several of his fighters are going to see action on the Carl Froch-Glen Johnson undercard on June 4th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Allan Green (29-3, 20KOs) will return for the first time since last November loss to Johnson. Green is likely going to return as a light heavyweight. Undefeated former champion Zsolt Erdei (32-0, 17KOs) will face Dawid Kostecki (36-1, 24KOs) in a light heavyweight fight, and undefeated middleweight/super middleweight prospect J'Leon Love (6-0, 5KOs) will see action on the show. Erdei, Green and Love are promoted by Lou DiBella.

NEW YORK – An opportunity to compete for the inaugural Super Six World Boxing Classic Cup will be on the line when Carl “The Cobra” Froch (27-1, 20 KOs) defends his World Boxing Council (WBC) super middleweight title against former world champion Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KOs) of Miami, Fla., in the last Semifinal of the Super Six World Boxing Classic on Saturday, June 4, live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from Adrian Philipps Ballroom of Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall.

WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch is not happy with having to face Glen Johnson at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on June 4. Froch wanted to stage his next fight before his loyal fans in Nottingham. The fight with Johnson is part of the semi-finals in the Super Six tournament. Froch's contract with Showtime, who coordinate the Super Six, directs the match to take place in America.
