Giancarlo Garbelli Passes Away, 81-Years-Old
By Per Ake Persson
Former Italian welterweight champ Giancarlo Garbelli has passed away at the age of 81 at Lurago D´Erba. Garbelli mixed in good company throughout his career and lost to Duilio Loi in a EBU title fight at lightweight and drew with Hungarian great Laszlo Papp in Milano in 1960 in a non-title fight. Garbelli turned pro in 1952 and retired in 63 but made a comeback in 72 and was stopped by future world champ Jose Duran. He went out with a total record of 72-14-11.
He was the most courageous, the most feared, the most brilliant, the most generous, intelligent, fearless champion of boxing that Italy has ever had.Post a Comment - View More User Comments (1)
