Gervonta Davis All Smiles as Final Assault Charge is Dropped

According to the Baltimore Sun, a misdemeanor second-degree assault charge against former world champion Gervonta Davis, 23 years old, was dropped at a hearing on Wednesday morning in Baltimore District Court after the accuser, Anthony Wheeler, said he did not wish to pursue the matter.

The paper notes that Wheeler and Davis shook hands and embraced as they were leaving the court room.

Davis originally faced first-degree assault charges in connection with an assault which allegedly took place on August 1. On the date in question, Wheeler - who described himself as a childhood friend of Davis - alleged that Davis punched him in the side of the head with a gloved fist. The first-degree assault charge was dropped on October 19 by the state.

Wheeler pressed charges with the District Court commissioner and a warrant for Davis was served in mid-September.

In his complaint, Wheeler claimed that he was at the Upton Boxing Center in West Baltimore when a fight broke out between Davis and his brother. Wheeler alleged that after the boxer’s bodyguard broke up the altercation, Davis wheeled around and “sucker punched me very violently.”

Wheeler claims he was knocked out and subsequently diagnosed with a concussion at St. Agnes Hospital.

2017 has been a mixed bag of tricks for Davis.

In January, Davis picked up his biggest career victory to date when he knocked out undefeated Jose Pedraza of Puerto Rico to win the IBF super featherweight world title in a Showtime televised fight from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Then he made a crushing first defense by traveling over to the UK for a demolition of mandatory challenger Liam Walsh.

But he never made a second defense of that title.

He was stripped after he failed to make the super featherweight limit of 130-pounds for his Showtime Pay-Per-View undercard fight on August 26 at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena - which was headlined by a showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor.

Despite the issue with weight, Davis raised his record to 19-0 with a lackluster stoppage of Francisco Fonseca in eight rounds.
