Robert Diaz, matchmaker for Golden Boy Promotions, has advised BoxingScene.com that unbeaten super middleweight George Groves will fight Francisco Sierra on the July 28 Robert Guerrero-Selcuk Aydin undercard in San Jose, Calif.
The 24-year-old Groves (14-0, 11 KOs) is co-promoted by Frank Warren and Golden Boy. The native of London, England, has amassed impressive back-to-back wins in his last two outings of 2011. A majority decision over James DeGale and a second-round stoppage of Paul Smith have landed the BBBofC British and Commonwealth 168-pound holder into bona fide contender statuts.
Sierra (25-5-1, 22 KOs) has lost two of three, but both defeats were to quality opposition in Jesus Gonzales (UD12) and Thomas Oosthuizen (TKO11). The 24-year-old from Nayarit, Mexico, bounced back in June with a six-round virtual shutout of previously undefeated prospect Rogelio Ruvalcaba.
The bout will take place at the HP Pavilion, and Showtime will televise the main event.
