George Groves (26-3, 19 KOs) is hoping to lure his stablemate, Tyron Zeuge (21-0-1, 11 KOs), into entering the World Boxing Super Series tournament.
Both Groves and Zeuge are promoted by Sauerland Event, who are helping stage the highly anticipated tournament - where there will be two high profile tournament competitions at super middleweight and cruiserweight. More than $50 million in prize money is up for grabs.
Groves has already entered the tournament. BoxingScene.com reported a few days ago that Zeuge was likely going to pass in order to take part in a rematch with Isaac Ekpo.
But there is a problem that Groves is very motivated to solve in this tournament - because both he and Zeuge are WBA champions.
Groves holds the WBA "super" title at the weight, while Zeuge is the WBA's "regular" champion.
Last year, the sanctioning body started merging these belts by ordering the super and regular champions to face each other.
Zeuge retained his title last weekend, with a dominating twelve round decision Paul Smith - who Groves knocked out a few years ago.
"Boxing fans will understand that, at the moment, the WBA have this strange thing where they have a super champion and a regular champion," Groves said to Sky Sports. "I've just achieved the dream and become WBA world champion - oh wait a minute, there's another guy who is fighting and defending it a couple of weeks later.
"If Zeuge goes in it and I fight Zeuge, we will eliminate one of those belts. I think he needs to step up in opposition. No disrespect to Paul Smith - he's been a great ambassador for the sport - but he hasn't been in massive competitive fights lately and he knows that. Zeuge is good enough. He's got a world title so he should be in this competition, I'd like to see him it but I'd like to get my hands on him first."
