According to promoter, Tom Loeffler, unified middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin - who famously coined the term 'Mexican Style' - will be visiting the country later this month.
"We're planning on going to Mexico in November. We've been invited there by both Tecate and the WBC and the mayor of Mexico City. So we're looking forward to going to Mexico City and to Monterrey,'' Loeffler said on Wednesday afternoon.
Golovkin recently expanded his endorsement deal with Tecate for the upcoming year and the WBC is one of the belts he holds at 160.
''Gennady has tons of fans in Mexico, he made a donation for the earthquake relief fund for Carlos Slim. He's already made the donation but we'll be doing the official ceremony during that time, as well,"noted Loeffler."I know the WBC has a lot of things planned for him at that time, as well as Tecate.
"There's a huge amount of media interest from the Mexican media after his fight with 'Canelo' (Saul Alvarez) which everyone thought that 'Triple G' won and he retained his titles so he's going to come down and pay tribute to Mexico City and to his Mexican fans," said Loeffler.
Back on September 16th in Las Vegas, Golovkin and Alvarez battled to a disputed draw, which in turn saw Golovkin retain the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC belts at the T-Mobile Arena. Currently there are on-going discussions between Loeffler and Golden Boy Promotions to do a rematch in May of 2018.
As recently reported on BoxingScene.com, Golden Boy Promotions is planning to get serious with the rematch negotiations next month, after the conclusion of the David Lemieux vs. Billy Joe Saunders WBO middleweight title fight. Lemieux, like Canelo, is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and could become another option - if he wins the WBO title - for the Mexican star.
