Geale: Mayweather-McGregor Hype is 10 Times Better Than Fight

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor are dominating headlines but do not expect former world middleweight champion Daniel Geale to watch the blockbuster showdown next month.

Mayweather will put his perfect 49-0 boxing record on the line against UFC star McGregor in Las Vegas on August 26.

Mixed martial arts champion McGregor is stepping away from the octagon and into the ring with the 40-year-old American, who is regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Before they touch gloves at T-Mobile Arena, Mayweather and McGregor have been busy promoting the highly-anticipated bout in Los Angeles, Toronto, New York and London – both fighters exchanging taunts and expletives throughout their public appearances.

But Australian Geale – who previously held the IBF, WBA and IBO belts in the middleweight division – is unimpressed with the "circus" that is Mayweather and McGregor, believing it is disrespectful to boxing.

"It's 100 percent a money-making drill," the 36-year-old, who is yet to decide if he will retire or not following his loss to countryman Renold Quinlan in 2016, told Omnisport. "As a professional boxer, I don't see it as a fight I would want to watch, that I would want to pay for.

"Obviously there's a lot of UFC fans and McGregor fans. Him making the switch over to boxing, it does make it interesting.

"But as a spectacle, there's no way I would pay money for it to watch at home. To be honest, I'd be tentative to go to a pub and watch it."

Geale added: "It's crazy. It does take away from a lot of quality fighters. People that are doing it for probably the right reasons.

"Mayweather and McGregor are great at promoting and self-promoting. Telling everybody what they want to hear but people tend to get let down.

"The lead up has been great, but it will probably be 10 times better than the actual fight."

"It's definitely disrespectful to the sport. It takes the sport out of it and turns it into a circus," he continued.

"I can understand, everybody is in it to make money. The only thing that frustrates me is those type of people, who the media love, they get so much attention and there are so many fighters around and great fighters that don't get any attention at all.

"I'm helping young fighters, who could become potential world champions if they were given the right fights. But they get nothing or half a phone call. The reason is, they obviously wouldn't talk that sort of crap."

Also, wasn't it just few days ago that millions of casual fans seeing Pac fight a mismatch in Jeff Horn and walk away with the perception that boxing is rigged and the judges are corrupt was supposed to hurt the…

The only reason there is hype is cause UFC is 95% casuals and they don't know the difference between mma striking and actual boxing

I disagree. The fight will deliver. TBE won't be shy about pulling out all his tricks and throwing hands now that he isn't fighting an atg, world champion, or former world champion for the first time in forever. I expect…
