Bill Emes catches up with middleweight contender Darren Barker to discuss his upcoming fight with IBF champion Daniel Geale

I've been a boxer for more than 20 years now. I started in Launceston when I was nine years old. I had my first amateur fight at the age of 10, this was the first of a great amateur career. I had 165 fights, with 135 wins. Growing up I was inspired to box by all of the greats. My favourite fight of all time is Marvin Haggler fighting Sugar Ray Leonard. Although I was heavily influenced by Kostya Tszyu, especially in his fight against Rodriguez. The way Tszyu disposed of him in the fight, it lit a fire within me. In my professional career, my favourite fight would have to be my fight against Felix Sturm. I feel this was my biggest test. I was in Germany fighting the 12 time defending champ. He was the poster boy for boxing in a country that has produced so many champions.

This is what it's all about - reaching the pinnacle of your sport should be everyone's goal and I'm close to it now. I truly believe I'm better than him, our paths have mirrored the other; we both boxed in the 2002 Commonwealth Games, he won gold at welterweight, I won at Light Welterweight, we boxed in the World Championships in 2003 in the same weight but on opposite sides of the draw, and I've kept an eye on his pro career as I have on a number of others and I'm very confident, I know what he's all about, I know what I'm all about and I know how to beat him so I can't wait for August 17.

IBF middleweight champion, Daniel Geale has arrived in the United States in preparation for his upcoming world title defense against the UK's Darren Barker. The bout will take place at the Revel Casino-Hotel in Atlantic City on August 17 televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark® beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT.

Darren Barker flies to America today to finish preparations for his IBF World middleweight title clash with Daniel Geale on August 17 at the Revel Hotel-Casino in Atlantic City, live on Sky Sports. The Londoner fights for a World crown for the second time in Atlantic City after taking on Sergio Martinez in October 2011. Since his brave 11th round defeat to the pound-for-pound star, the 31 year old has seen off his injury woes and recorded impressive back-to-back fourth round stoppage wins over Kerry Hope and Simone Rotolo. Barker sets up camp in New Jersey this week to add the finishing touches to his plans, and he is confident he’ll return home with the belt.

NEW JERSEY - Ever since Daniel Geale (29-1, 15 KOs) pulled off the unthinkable by defeating Felix Sturm on Sturm's home turf of Germany in September of last year, Geale has essentially cemented himself as one of the elite 160 pounders in boxing. With the prestige and pageantry associated with such esteem comes the responsibility of self-improvement, a trait that often associates itself with the kind of high caliber athlete with an obsession for competition. It wasn't enough for Geale to take a bite out of the world stage nor was it completely satisfying when he became the No. 1 fighter in his home country of Australia. That is why Geale is thrilled to have his next fight scheduled on U.S. soil. Immediately following his victory over Strum, Geale made it apparent that he had all intentions to make a name for himself in America, but had unfinished business in Australia with Anthony Mundine, in which he scored a unanimous decision victory. He is still adamant about growing his brand in America.

NEW JERSEY - Revel Casino-Hotel, Atlantic City's newest and largest casino resort, will proudly host the highly anticipated middleweight showdown between IBF titleholder Daniel Geale (29-1, 15KOs) and No. 6 rated contender from the UK Darren Barker (25-1, 16KOs) on August 17th. Gary Shaw Productions in association with Grange Old School Boxing, and Matchroom Boxing, will promote the event which will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark® beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT. This is the first time a boxing event will take place at Revel Casino-Hotel since its grand opening in May of last year. Shaw is very excited to present the show and also the potential for bringing more events to Revel. He knows this card is an incredible opportunity to kick off boxing at the fantastically vibrant venue, Ovation Hall. Event start time is 7 p.m.

Darren Barker will challenge IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York on August 17. It will be the Barnet man's second world title fight after he lost to Sergio Martinez in 2011. "This is a golden opportunity for me and I feel it's my time to shine," said Barker. "It's been a tough journey for me but I'm one fight away from realising my dream and becoming world champion.
