According to promoter Mr. Honda of Teiken Boxing, WBC super featherweight champion Gamaliel "Platano" Diaz (37-9-2, 17KOs) will make the first defense of his title on a date in February or March in Tokyo, as part of a big tripleheader being planned. It was thought that Sergio "Yeyo" Thompson (25-2, 23KOs), but the WBC did not place him in line as the mandatory challenger at the recent convention in Cancun.
Diaz, in of the year's biggest upset wins, traveled to Japan and pulled in a twelve round decision over Takahiro Aoh to capture the WBC title. Next year, Teiken plans to match him against Japanese contender Takashi Miura (24-2-2, 18KOs).
