Peter Fury, uncle and trainer of IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, is giving Chris Eubank Jr. (23-1, 18KOs) a shot to crumble the massive odds with an upset win over WBC/IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).
Last Saturday night, Eubank made the first defense of his British middleweight championship with a fourth round stoppage of previously undefeated domestic contender Tom Doran (17-1, 7KOs), who went down four times before the referee waved off the contest.
There are serious negotiations to stage Golovkin-Eubank in the fall. Golovkin, due to his pound-for-pound status and 22 fight knockout streak, is a huge favorite in the contest. Golovkin fought in April, demolishing IBF mandatory challenger Dominic Wade in two rounds.
If a deal is finalized, it appears the contest might land in the O2 Arena in London. Eubank's promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport is trying to work out the final particulars of the agreement.
While many view Eubank Jr. as a domestic level fighter - at least right now - Peter Fury believes he belongs at the world level category and expects him to do better than many would expect. He tabs Golovkin to win, but doesn't rule out the possibility of Eubank pulling it off.
"I think Eubank Jr is a good world-level fighter and can give Golovkin a good fight. I would see Golovkin getting the job done but I wouldn't write Eubank Jr off," Peter Fury told Sky Sports.
"I've met them and spoken to the Eubank's a couple of times and they're okay. I have no problem with them and I think Eubank Jr is a world level fighter. I like to see him box, he brings something to the sport and is entertaining. I think he can go a long way and I also think he's got a chance if and when he takes on Golovkin."
