Froch-Groves: Fitch Could Be Out, New Ref May Come In

By Edward Chaykovsky

The rematch is only days away and the search for a referee continues. This Saturday night before 80,000 fans at London's Wembley Stadium, Carl Froch will defend the IBF/WBA 'regular' super middleweight titles against George Groves.

The initial pick to referee the match was Jack Reiss, but Froch's promoter Eddie Hearn objected to his appointment. The next man, which Hearn liked, was Charlie Fitch.

According to the IBF, there is now a fresh objection about Fitch. The IBF have officially stated that Fitch (or even Reiss) could still officiate this Saturday night, but they also confirm there are ongoing discussions for another referee as well.

Lindsey Tucker, IBF Championships Chairman, told

"We had some discussions and different people complained about different ones. Yes there were discussions about a third one, but I'm not at liberty to give out any names. Well it's possible [Reiss or Fitch may be the referee], it's possible it could still be one of those guys, but I can't really say anything right now."
Kenny Bayless is usually a good referee at the big events (even if he did let Broner bodyslam Molina).
Agreed, my favorite ref, almost always on point

I always thought they should of brought Kenny in. Always thought he was a great ref.
The flipside is next time Groves sees a Rubik's Cube he might try to eat it.
Lol, Groves wouldn't know what to do with a Rubik's cube is even now. He probably thinks it's a set of traffic lights.
Exactly. The whole reason there's a rematch is because people thought the first fight was stopped prematurely. That won't be any premature stoppages with Smoger.
The flipside is next time Groves sees a Rubik's Cube he might try to…
Just get Smoger, you fucking plonkers.
Exactly. The whole reason there's a rematch is because people thought the first fight was stopped prematurely. That won't be any premature stoppages with Smoger.
