We should have a clearer indication as to whether interim WBC welterweight king Robert Guerrero is a great fighter or simply very good, when he locks horns with ex WBC and IBF belt holder Andre Berto at the Citizen’s Business Bank Arena, Ontario, California this Saturday. Watch the fight live and exclusive in the UK on BoxNation, the new home of boxing, SkyCh.437/Virgin Ch.546. Join at www.frankwarren.com Known as ‘The Ghost’, the 29 year old from nearby Gilroy collected IBF straps down at 126 and 130lbs. His standing as an ‘interim’ champion with the WBA and WBO at 135lbs plus his present status permits him to make the tenuous claim of being a four division ‘world’ champion. The 5ft 9in southpaw is certainly a quality human being. After his wife Casey, a childhood sweetheart, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2007, Guerrero placed his world championship aspirations on the backburner to tend to her. After a January 2010 transplant, she now appears cancer free.

As Britain’s only ever world amateur boxing world champion, Frankie Gavin was expected to take the fast track to professional glory. ‘Funtime Frankie’ was abundantly blessed with the attributes and instincts that simply cannot be coached. He was, in boxing parlance, a natural. But five and a half years on from that historic victory in Chicago, his passage to the summit has encountered a chain of interruptions – several cruel twists of fate and a couple self-inflicted - and, though he remains unbeaten, the 27-year-old is now keen to make up for lost time.

Frankie Gavin says he’ll retire British Welterweight Champion Junior Witter once and for all when they clash this Thursday night at the York Hall, Bethnal Green. The unbeaten Birmingham ace has only had 13 fights but he’s confident he’ll finish off the 38-year-old wily veteran to claim his Lonsdale belt, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546). Even though Witter, the former WBC World Light-Welterweight Champion, has never been stopped in 48 fights, Gavin reckons he could be the first. “Witter’s had a good career, he’s won the world title, plus Commonwealth, European and British titles, but I believe that this will finally be the end of the road for him when I take that Lonsdale belt from him."

New meets old at the York Hall this Thursday evening, when rising former world amateur star Frankie Gavin challenges wise old warhorse Junior Witter for the British welterweight title. Witter v Gavin is live and exclusive on BoxNation, The Home Of Boxing, (Sky Ch.437/Virgin Ch.546). Join at www.boxnation.com Here, in his own words, the champion’s long standing trainer-manager Dominic Ingle provides boxing writer Glynn Evans with a fascinating insight into Witter, the deep, introverted but talented switch hitter who he moulded and cajoled from a youth into a British, Commonwealth, European and world champion. “I first became aware of Junior when he boxed Ryan Rhodes, who was the weight above, as an amateur. Even then, you could see he was a bit different to everybody else. He had similar attributes to those taught at our gym, naturally tricky, delivering shots off awkward angles, but he’d developed the style himself. A while after, he rolled up at our gym cos he’d seen all our top kids appearing on TV."

British Welterweight Champion Junior Witter say he’ll KO challenger Frankie Gavin inside four rounds when they clash at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Thursday 1st November, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546). Bradford’s Witter, 38, a former WBC World Light-Welterweight Champion, makes the first defence of the Lonsdale belt that he won in May against Colin Lynes, turning back the clock to outpoint Lynes over twelve rounds. With 48 fights under his belt and training at the famous Wincobank Gym in Sheffield, he says he’ll have too much experience for his 27-year-old challenger who’s unbeaten in 13 fights and making his first big step up. Witter said, “I’ve got the experience, know-how and I’ve been there, seen it and done it, what has Frankie Gavin done so far?”

Birmingham welterweight ace Frankie Gavin might just be the most naturally blessed boxer operating in Britain at present. However, after a troubled spell last year, England’s only ever world amateur champion is now back on form and ready for his crucial British title challenge to Junior Witter at the York Hall a week on Thursday (1st November), live on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546). Head cleansed, he is anxious to make up for lost time and certainly appeared close to his exhilarating best when rebounding with a brace of stoppage wins earlier this year. After stints in Manchester with ‘Arnie’ Farnell and, briefly, in London’s East End with the Tibbs', the still unbeaten 27 year old is back in Brum and re-united with ex-amateur coach Tom Chaney. Boxing writer Glynn Evans tracked down coach Chaney to discuss Gavin’s rehabilitation.

It’s not only his colossal 6ft 8in, 245lb frame that promises to distinguish David Price as the biggest emerging star in British boxing. The 29 year old Liverpudlian appears the Brit best equipped to dominate the world heavyweight division since Lennox Lewis. Unbeaten in 13 pro gigs, with 11 victims crumbling early (10 inside four rounds), the reigning British and Commonwealth king, known as ‘The Power Ranger’, has lately demonstrated a frightening kayo punch to supplement the technical tools that saw him cruise to three ABA titles, a Commonwealth Games gold medal and bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
