Toyota Center, Texas - A battle between power-punching Mexico City natives, saw 23-year-old top lightweight contender Isaac Cruz (22-1-1, 15 KOs) score a wide unanimous decision over former champion Francisco Vargas (27-3-2, 19 KOs). The official scores were 100-89, 99-90 and 97-92.

Isaac Cruz couldn’t knock out an aged former champion Saturday night, but he was plenty active and accurate enough to defeat Francisco Vargas. Mexico City’s Cruz consistently landed the harder punches in their 10-round lightweight bout and won a unanimous decision over the bloodied Mexican veteran. Judges Jesse Reyes (97-92), Randy Russell (99-90) and Eva Zaragoza (100-89) scored the 23-year-old Cruz the winner of a fight Showtime televised from Toyota Center in Houston as part of the Jermall Charlo-Juan Macias Montiel undercard.

Francisco Vargas respects that Isaac Cruz is a much younger, powerful opponent attempting to fight his way to a world title shot. The 36-year-old Vargas considers Cruz’s most recent performance evidence, however, that he can be beaten by an experienced ex-champion Saturday night. The William Hill sports book lists Cruz as a 6-1 favorite in a 10-round lightweight bout Showtime will televise as part of a tripleheader from Toyota Center in Houston, but Vargas views this as a perfect opportunity to rejuvenate his career on the Jermall Charlo-Juan Macias Montiel undercard.

Jermall Charlo didn’t seem overly concerned about being overweight Friday afternoon in Houston. The defending WBC middleweight champion stepped on the Texas Combative Sports Program’s scale at 160.4 pounds for his 12-round, 160-pound championship clash against Juan Macias Montiel on Saturday night. Mexico’s Montiel met his contractual obligation by officially weighing in at 159.5 pounds.
