Did 'skinning' help Barrera punish Juarez?

Those who watched WBC super-featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera's unanimous decision victory over Rocky Juarez on Saturday in Las Vegas might have noticed the strange tape job on Barrera's gloves.
Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward, who was working as one of the HBO pay-per-view analysts, picked up on it. The tape came up past the thumb.
Veteran trainer Juanito Ibarra of Mission Viejo said Barrera's tape job was one of the most egregious instances of "skinning" the gloves he has seen.
"Skinning" the gloves is when the gloves are stretch back as much as possible and taped, which exposes more of the knuckles and therefore creates more damage when a punch is landed.
"It happened in front of our eyes," Ibarra said.
Each fighter is allowed to have a member of his camp observe when an opponent is having his hands wrapped and the gloves put on and taped.
Keith Kizer, executive officer of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, said Juarez's camp watched as Barrera had his hands wrapped. Kizer said Juarez's camp complained about the way Barrera had his hands wrapped, and Barrera had to have them re-wrapped. However, they didn't complain about the tape job.
Kizer said Barrera's tape job "went to the line and stopped there." Kizer was asked if he ever had seen a tape job that went that high on the gloves?
"It's very rare," Kizer said. "I don't know if I've ever seen it like that."
Kizer said the commission might have to take a closer look at "skinning" the gloves issues.
"We give a little leeway, maybe too much," he said. "We might have to cut back on that. Skinning might need more strict regulation."
