PRINCE Naseem Hamed's prison minder last night said the shamed boxer is living in fear of the hardmen at his jail.
Colin George, who was released at the weekend, said Hamed spent days cowering in his cell - too petrified to leave it to eat, exercise or wash.
Colin added: "As soon as Naseem arrived, he was showered with threats.
"People were warning him they would smash him up and do him over, if he thought he was tougher than them.
"Cons that were keen to make a name for themselves were always in Naseem's face."
Hamed, jailed for 15 months for dangerous driving after crashing into another car at 90mph, is infamous for his boastful taunting of opponents. But Colin, 38, said the former world featherweight champion was clearly stunned by the harsh reality of life at Moorland open prison near Doncaster, South Yorks.
He said: "He got a lot of verbal from the other cons and you could see the shock in his eyes.
"When he first came in, he wouldn't eat, he wouldn't mix, he wouldn't train. He'd just sit in his cell and stare at the wall.
"You may think Moorland is a soft option, but you'd be wrong. There are some vicious boys in there. They transfer a lot of higher risk prisoners to Moorland because of overcrowding at other jails. And when five or six boys who are tooled up surround you, threaten you and then go mental on you and leave you for dead, what chance do you have?"
But Colin, a former amateur boxer who knew Hamed from his days in the ring, befriended the bemused star - and kept the bully boys at bay. The pair soon became a familiar sight around the prison, with 6ft Colin towering over the 5ft 3in Hamed.
Colin said: "Naseem can be very ****y and is known for shouting his mouth off. But I told him not to respond to come-ons and challenges from other cons."
Eventually, Hamed ventured out of his cell to start training in the gym. Colin said: "When he first came in the gym, it was pretty hairy.
"But I stood with him and told some of these guys the score."
Colin said chubby Hamed is now trying to lose some of the weight he has piled on - and plans a return to the ring. He added: "I believe in my heart of hearts that he will box again because he's told me so. He wants to be back in the ring. He wants to do it for his family."
Colin, who served four months for perverting justice, said Hamed is "burning inside" at the thought of being locked up when wife Eleasha gives birth to his third child in September.
Hamed, 32, is also said to be deeply sorry for causing the crash that left the other driver in hospital for weeks after breaking every major bone in his body.
Colin said: "He's upset by what he has done and jail brings it back to him every day." Colin denied reports that Hamed gets preferential treatment in Moorland. He said: "Naseem lives the same sort of life in prison as everyone else.
"In his cell, all he has is a prayer mat, his Koran, photos of his family and one of him lifting his belt as he won the title.
"He spends a lot of time watching TV in his cell. He doesn't like mixing as there's still an undercurrent of friction."
