DBN recently put out a video talking to Ross Thompson about the spitting incident with Fernando Vargas after a knockdown in their grudge match back in 2000.
This inspired me to read up about why there was such animosity leading up to the fight. This was was merely supposed to be a tuneup for Vargas leading up to the Trinidad fight.
Apparently Thompson smacked Vargas on the face at the presser but then got clipped with a left hook by Vargas that knocked him off the stage. He then came charging back and landed a shot on Gary Shaw that drew blood. I would love to see footage of this.
Here's the video with Ross Thompson's take on the story. He talks about how the hate was so deep that their families and even their moms were getting into shoving matches and verbal altercations.
And here is a article about the animosity before and during the fight, including what happened at the presser.

2. THOMPSON, the undeserving mandatory challenger, boiled over at the final press conference two days before the fight. After labeling the unbeaten star “all hype”, “overrated”, and a “bum”, he launched across the table in an attempt to punch him. He was then knocked off the platform by a counter left hand from Vargas. Thompson was raging. He flew back on stage and fired a shot at promoter Gary Shaw that drew blood.
