Post Comments Thread For: Mansour: Smoger Bailed Cunningham Out From KO Loss

Fans who witnessed the Amir Mansour - Steve Cunningham battle in April will likely agree that it was one of the more entertaining heavyweight match-ups of recent times. After the bout, Mansour conceded in an interview with NBC that he thought he may have lost the fight. However, upon review in the weeks after, the Delaware man has changed his opinion. Not only that, Mansour was not happy with the officiating from experienced New Jersey man, Steve Smoger, particularly with regards to the two knock downs suffered by Cunningham in the fifth round. Amir told BoxingScene he was not shocked to see his Philadelphia rival bounce back when it appeared he was on the verge of being stopped.

what a bunch of bull****.

i went back and watched the 5th round and there is nothing wrong with the way smoger handled the knockdowns. he may have given cunningham an extra second after the last one, but the round was over anyways.

idk if mansour ever watched a fight before but its not uncommon at all that more than 10 seconds go by from the point when a fighter goes down to the point that the ref tells them to resume the action. the ref needs to make sure he is alright to continue, thats gonna take a few seconds so if someone just barely beat the count it will take more than 10 seconds.

mansour acting as if cunningham got all this extra time to recover is just plain false, it didnt happen. manufactured excuse from a sore loser, pathetic..

Hey Mansour, if you weren't such a slob and were in shape, it wouldn't have mattered. You did well in the opening rounds, but Cunningham was obviously in better shape and it showed. Don't blame this on Smoger, he did just fine.

Mansour is right actually. It sounds like sour grapes, which it obviously also is, but Cunningham surely looked to get the benefit of Smoger that night. It could have been waved off in the 5th round for sure and nobody would have been able to argue against it, really. But this is boxing, a very corrupt business.

The fight was uninteresting enough at the time. What makes Mansour think people care two months later?

If a guy just beats the count like Cunningham did, and the ref isn't sure if he's ok to continue, it seems like he's going to get criticism whatever he does next. If he just waves the fight right off, the guy who was down will always complain he was ok to continue and the ref should have checked him out before calling it. If the ref does check him out, which takes a little longer than 10 seconds, then lets him continue and he goes on to win, the opponent is always going to complain about a "long count".
When a boxer struggles to beats the count, and just makes it, he doesn't often go on to win, so it isn't often an issue. But if he does go on to win, you can bet your life the opponent will complain about it. I'm just surprised Mansour took this long to get round to doing it.

It was an extremely slow count by Smoger, which aided Cunningham a bit, but it happened at the end of the round, plus Steve has rebounded from knock downs the majority of his career. So, poor count but ultimately probably didn't matter much.
