Post Comments Thread For: Muhammad Aliís Greatest Fight: HBO Film Finds Fresh Angle

Not another Muhammad Ali movie.

When first it was announced that HBO would be producing a film about Aliís Supreme Court case, this scribe canít be alone in the sentiment. For all his stature, there is a fair feeling that the Ali story at times has over saturated the market. After Michael Mannís biopic Ali, When We Were Kings, and even the TV film King of the World, along with countless documentaries, whatís left?

It turns out there was another story to tell.

Reviewing an advance copy of Muhammad Aliís Greatest Fight, debuting Saturday on HBO (8:00 PM EST), the story left to tell really wasnít about Ali at all. Itís a story about process, politics, the US Constitution, and the men appointed to decipher, interpret, and defend it.

Itís worth a view.

The movie isnít without its issues. The juxtaposition of documentary style footage of Ali

Cliff Rold's skills would allow him to be a very good film critic. Politics from older era's robbed a lot of good fighters. Joe Louis thought he was doing the right thing doing exhibition matches for the troops. Some spiteful irs agents caused him an incredible burden by taxing what he could have made. He was forced to get back into the ring and take some beatings from younger fighters to try to pay his taxes. The debt could have been forgiven, it should have never been charged to him in the first place, but it was not. He you had a man trying to do a good thing and it cost him his retirement. Ali to me was in the same place. Politics cost him the best years of his career. The nation of islam washated by most americans and that hate was transfered to it's members. People even wanted to see ali lose when they couldn't convince him to change his name back to clay. Some times im still surprised at how popular ali became given how unpopular he was. He lived in the great state of michigan until just recently.

With Ali's condition, it is surprising many of the guys he has fought have died. Not sure how much time Ali has left but so many have been inspired by him, fighters who we would never have seen because they would not have become Boxers, but for the inspiration he provided.
