Post Comments Thread For: Broner Lacks Dazzle in Winning Third Divisional Crown

By Thomas Gerbasi - BROOKLYN – Paulie Malignaggi was a “Problem” for Adrien Broner, that much was made clear over the course of their WBA welterweight championship bout Saturday night at Barclays Center. Not enough of a problem to beat the Cincinnati phenom, but enough that Broner’s 12 round unanimous decision wasn’t as dazzling as the gold shorts he wore in the ring.

But a win’s a win, and Broner’s was a clear one, despite the split verdict of 117-111, 115-113, and 113-115, as he added the 147-pound title to his championships at 130 and 135 pounds, making it another big night for the 23-year-old, despite the fact that the underrated Malignaggi was a prohibitive underdog heading into the fight.

Malignaggi wasn’t going to lose big in his hometown of Brooklyn though, and he may have silenced a few critics in the process, presenting a style Broner had yet to see in the ring.

The “Paulie” chants started as soon as the bell rang, but Broner met them stone-faced as Malignaggi tried to work his jab. Content to stand in the pocket and potshot, it was Broner who was on target first with two stiff lefts that reddened the champion’s face. Malignaggi stayed busy to the bell, even though most of his shots landed on his foe’s arms. [Click Here To Read More]

By what definition? Guess that's why Schaeffer and Hopkins had to sell the win to the press after the fight...

That knee was no different from what Ortiz did to Mayweather. A blatant foul. He could've injured Paulie badly with that. I know Esteves is under a lot of pressure in a main event with Broner being the "star" and all but he should have deducted a point or two for that foul. Actually Broner did a lot of unprofessional **** in that fight. Too many warnings, no point deduction.

117-111 was BS too.

Valiant effort by Malignaggi, but Broner definitely edged it. To me, that was a good performance for Paulie to retire on. His speed and quickness has noticeably deteriorated. As far as Broner is concerned, I wholeheartedly think he should move back down to 140. The first time he fights an elite welterweight with power, he will lose his undefeated record. I also think the elite at 140 could very well beat him as well. IMO, he is definitely NOT the next Floyd Mayweather, just a less-talented, but still talented, imitation.

That was an automatic 1 point deduction without any warning when he used his knee on paulies balls. That just showed how he didnt like getting hit at first and how frustrated he was the first couple of rounds. Also constanly hitting on the kidney and esteves warns him until the end. When he was punching when paul grabbed him for behind. That gay as wwf move he tried to pull this retard really believes he is that good while fighting bums or small pillow fistd fighters. Would like to see how dirty he would react when he feels a strong ww punch and is getting pressure. Honestly dont know why so many broner fans are so high on him best boxers on his resume pdl got a gift, and now paulie another gift 117-111 card or close fight regardless is a fail when you face an old pillow fisted fighter like malignagiie.

Through rose tinted glasses Broner may of win this fight...
Its clear as day Malignaggi got robbed in this fight, Broner spent more time **** talking than he did actually fighting!
Paulie is the champion and he was the one who had to fight like the challenger due to usual Showtime bull**** of protecting their highest asset/prospect, this should of been a career high and Malignaggi's best win to date but boxing and Showtime robbed him of that and you're going to stand there and say Broner "edged it"...
Broner was exposed last night.

Broner looked average. No way he is the future of boxing. Guys with a lot less adulation looked better against Paulie. Btw what a homosexual song broner came out to.

Broner got it done but welterweight may be a bit too much at this moment. He should move down a class where there is plenty of options. Use your size and skill to season you, then consider going back up.

The expectations for Broner were an impressive win against a tailor made (no power) opponent like Paulie to grab a "title" belt. It was all positioning from GBP, but, they didn't anticipate Paulie exposing Broner for what he is. A talented fighter but not a superstar, it's a little different when you can't impose your size on smaller fighters and Paulie is a small welter.
