Post Comments Thread For: Adrien "The Problem" Broner: To Be The Man…

by Cliff Rold - This Saturday night, WBC Lightweight titlist Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO) will move up two weight classes to attempt to win a belt in his third weight division. The target, WBA Welterweight titlist Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO), enters the underdog. Coming off a narrow escape against the slower, if larger, Pablo Cesar Cano, Malignaggi is seen by many as vulnerable.

Moving up in weight is always seen as sort of a de facto extra challenge, even when it’s not. In this era of day before weigh-ins, moves up the scale often represent a fighter simply growing into the weight class he might already have been in during another era.

Broner, while not particularly tall, has long had the frame of a smaller Welterweight. His struggles in attempting and failing to remain at Jr. Lightweight were well documented last year. In a defense of his Lightweight title in February, he was clearly the bigger man against more natural Lightweight Gavin Rees.

He was also clearly better.

While Broner has yet to face anything close to one of the sports premiere talents, his combination of speed and offensive artillery stands out from the crowd. A wealth of charisma and attitude, both of which make him an easy sell for television and a social media age ripe for self-promotion, increase his early significance. [Click Here To Read More]

But you don't have to "beat the man....

The Man will retire soon. There will always be the "next man", one way or another.

The same Broner who got his ass handed to him by a much smaller Ponce de Leon? And gifted a ridiculous decision?

Broner is nothing against any JWW or WW with a punch - and he might not even get past Malignaggi, so this is all a bit premature.

Of course americans would love to see another american stepping into Mayweathers shoes, but I have the feeling that it won't be Broner.

When Broner was scheduled to fight DeMarco, DeMarco was supposaed to be a "Premirer" opponent. After he DESTROYED him, then DeMarco is just a bum. Call Paulie what you want, but I think he's a champ. Beating a champ in your first visit to two weight classes above your last fight IS something special.

Exactly. Broner is getting the Floyd treatment without the Floyd resume. And ultimately, I think that will be his undoing because he's chasing paydays too early in his career. But that's another discussion.

Think about this. People are busting on AB's resume, but lookahere. If he beats Paulie, he will have three victories over guys currently rated in the top 10 of their division by Ring magazine. Demarco, Rees, and Paulie. GGG, who people love, has none, which will hopefully change against Macklin. Matthysse, who people are creamin' over, has three opponents currently rated in the top 10 in their divisions by The Ring. But he's 1-2 (albeit controversal loses) against them. Broner is getting killed for fighting contenders. When the reality is, he's only 23 and hasn't even been fighting world class competition for that long.

So what he had a tough fight with Ponce. Floyd had a tough fight early in his career with Emmanual Augustus, who had like 20 loses. Ward was dropped and damn near KO'd by Darrnell Boone. JMM and B-Hop lost their pro debuts. Wladimir was KO'd several times. Martinez was stopped by Margarito early in his career. Pac was KO'd twice as a flyweight. Bradley was dropped twice by Kendall Holt. Cotto's lil brother had Canelo on queer street. Cotto was damn near KO'd by "Chop Chop" Corley and Ricardo Torres early in his career. And the list goes on and on. A couple close calls early in one's career isn't an indicator one way or another on how a fighter's career will ultimately play out.

Winning a very close decision - whether you think Ponce De Leon deserved the nod or not - hardly qualifies as "ass handed to him".

As for being nothing against any JWW or WW with a punch? Funny... you've not seen him in against a JWW or WW with a punch. We know for a fact that a LW with a punch represents next-to-no threat. When Rees and DeMarco landed clean, Broner did not even blink. He just walked right through them. Sure, Ponce De Leon hustled him a bit, but Broner was/is just a kid. A kid has to learn. Mayweather struggled with Castillo, Augustus. Hopkins lost his 1st fight. Ward got dropped hard by a journeyman. Pacquiao got KO'd twice by nobodies when he was very young and blazing up the weight divisions. JMM got DQ'd in his 1st fight. All the top fighters struggled with some opponent early in their career with the exception of perhaps Muhammed Ali. I can think of few others.

From what I have seen, Broner was a huge LW. He'll be as big or bigger than Paulie on fight night. Punching power will be on his side. That's my prediction.
