Post Comments Thread For: Criticisms of Mikey Garcia Carry No Worthwhile Weight

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - The boxing crowd is a notoriously tough one to please.

Sit at a fight for a minute or two of less-than-Hagler/Hearns action and youíre likely to hear boos begin raining from the impatient rafters. Decide to give up on a fight with less than a flat-lining heart monitor and youíll be branded a quitter or a coward by the momís basement keyboard set.

Or as Mikey Garcia has found since Saturday, fail to boil an already gaunt 128-pound frame down to the legal featherweight limit and have a career-defining win dismissed as both unpardonable and cheap.

For whatever reason, thatís the one thatís got me particularly irritated. [Click Here To Read More]

I haven't heard much of outcry regarding Mikey's weight... Not too much, anyway...

If fighters cant or wont make the weight why have em???!!!!!
If a fighter comes in heavy i think the fight should be called off an the guy who didnt make it loses period if he has a title it goes to the challenger bet it wont happen as often after a couple belts get snatched up.
I also feel there should only be allowed a 10 pound weight gain after the weight in if the fighter is fighting at 154 he can only weigh 164 fight night no more balloning up two ta three weight classes is rediculouse this weight s**t is gettin outta hand!!!!

That's one thing it always gets me pissed, Why if you walk around 150 you kill yourself making 126 on a Friday to fight close to your real body weight a day after?

That's an awful article. Juanma would have just walked away if it was unfair?

Yeah, because it's that simple. JMM could have just walked away when Floyd cheated him on the scales. Escobedo could just have walked away from Broner.

We all know boxers are so spoiled for choice and opportunity that they could all walk away from big fights in that fashion and have no fear of any negative consequences whatsoever. Arum and HBO would probably have congratulated Juanma for being so principled.

Default Switch weigh-ins back to fight night!

Couldn't disagree anymore.

1. The contract was signed for 126, NOT 128. No way will I condone a champion coming in overweight & refuse to lose the last 2lbs. If he's weight-drained, that's his problem. He signed a contract for 126. Honor it like a man and the champion that you're supposed to be. Garcia had no issues making weight for Salido. Now 1 fight removed, he does?

2. What is it now with Robert Garcia's fighters? First Rios - now Mikey can't make weight? What's next, Nonito going up to 135 & Maidana to 160?

3. Beating a shot Juanma is not career-defining, by no stretch of the imagination. Coming in with a weight advantage vs. Juanma who was disciplined enough, but again shot & beating him from pillar to post is deserving of boos....

I agree, but again weigh-ins should go back to fight night - no weight advantages there and no excuses because both could claim weight-drainage.....

I agree with everything you said.

Walk away. That has to be a joke.
First if you walk away who is going to pay your trainer, cutman, and all you crew. You still have to pay them for doing their job. If Juanma did not fight then, Juanma would not have got paid. HBO would probably not give him another date in the network because he could pull out of the fight if the other fighter does not make weight. So HBO will not take that risk again.

I kinda lost some respect for Mikey for coming in overweight and not trying to lose the 2lbs overage.
I picked him to win by KO, but not this way.
I felt so sorry for Juanma after the first KD, that it got too painful to watch after that.

Mikey should be able to redeem himself at 130 and rebound from this mess, unless he tries to stay at 126 on his next fight, which I will lose ALL respect.
