Default Belts have killed some fights

We've had many potentially great fights either stalled or unrealized because one fighter is forced into a mandatory just to keep ahold of his championship belt.

One of the classic instances here was the RJJ situation where he wanted to keep the belts but it cost him the chance to fight Darius in the most meaningful fight at 175 lbs.

If you were the boxer or at least a close advisor would you keep/tell them to keep the belt or fight an opponent that the public is demanding you get in the ring with?
